Tracking Press coverage
Getting press coverage is only half the job. Tracking it, knowing where you were mentioned, by whom, and what impact it had on AI visibility, helps you assess the evidence and refine your strategy. Coverage and sampled visibility changes alone do not establish revenue return.
How Outrigger monitors for coverage
For active clients with a press campaign, Press can run a weekly scan for new brand mentions across:
- News-oriented search results: Finds articles surfaced for brand and press-release queries
- General web results: Finds guest posts, blog features, and other third-party mentions
The scheduled scan runs weekly when the press-coverage job is enabled and the account has available budget and credits. You can also add coverage manually, which is useful when a new article has not appeared in search yet.
Coverage classification
When coverage is detected, Outrigger uses the search result title and snippet to classify it:
| Type | What It Is | AI Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Feature article | Dedicated piece about your brand/story | Highest |
| Mention in roundup | Listed among several brands in a category article | High |
| Expert quote | Your spokesperson quoted in a broader article | High |
| Brief mention | Brand name appears in passing | Moderate |
| Press release pickup | Your release republished verbatim | Low |
Feature articles and expert quotes usually represent stronger editorial evidence than an automated release pickup. Because automatic classification is based on search snippets, verify important entries against the source article and correct them manually when needed.
Measuring Press impact on AI visibility
Press and Sonar give you two timelines to compare, but the product does not claim that a coverage item caused a visibility change.
Coverage record
Press stores the article URL, publication, author and date when available, coverage type, sentiment, estimated authority, and backlink fields. Automatically inferred fields should be treated as leads to verify, not as audited facts.
Share of model comparison
Use Sonar to compare Share of Model before and after meaningful coverage lands. A change in the same period is a useful investigation prompt, not proof of attribution.
Source review
If a monitored AI response includes sources, inspect those source URLs directly. Source-level press attribution is not currently joined automatically in the coverage screen.
Unlinked mention detection
Not all press coverage includes a link to your website. Coverage records support both:
- Linked mentions: The article includes a hyperlink to your site
- Unlinked mentions: Your brand name appears but without a link
An unlinked mention can still provide independent brand evidence, while a linked mention also creates a referral and backlink opportunity. Verify the link state on the article itself; a search snippet cannot establish it reliably.
That said, unlinked mentions represent a link-building opportunity. Reach out to the journalist or publication and ask if they'd be willing to add a link: many will, since you're asking for something simple that improves their article.
Building coverage reports
The coverage screen currently summarizes:
- Total coverage in the selected client's record
- Backlink count and known dofollow count
- Average estimated authority where a value is available
- Feature count
- Article-level details including publication, type, link state, and sentiment
Monthly reports do not yet include a standalone press-performance export. Use the coverage record as the source of truth when building a client summary.
Press coverage as ongoing asset
Possible paths to investigate after coverage include:
- Articles stay indexed in Google for years
- AI models reference archived articles alongside recent ones
- Each piece of coverage makes the next one easier (journalists see you've been covered elsewhere)
- Your brand entity grows stronger with each independent mention
This is why press velocity matters: each month of consistent coverage adds to a growing asset that continues to influence AI visibility long after publication.
In Outrigger
Press runs a weekly discovery scan for eligible campaign clients, classifies likely coverage, and also accepts manual entries. Review detected items for accuracy, then compare the dated record with Sonar trends without presenting correlation as attribution.
